We have fewer garden visitors in the winter but those who remain through the cold weather are hardy and admirable. We and the cats like to sit by the large window overlooking the garden and watch them go about their business. It’s very relaxing to observe their antics.

Winter icing
After two days of freezing rain and freezing drizzle in early January, all vegetation in our neighbourhood was covered with glaze ice. The clear ice coating is beautiful to look at but harbours dangers underfoot and overhead. Optimistic that no branch would snap and fall on our heads, we set off to our local wooded parkland with cleats on our boots to capture the beauty.

Starting in December every year, monuments and sites in Ottawa come to life through a wonderful display of colours set against the longest nights of winter. We had over 90 cm of snow in Ottawa in December 2022, which kept us busy shoveling. When the weather got milder near the end of the month, it was enticing for both locals and visitors to go for a stroll downtown to enjoy the lights.
