In our house, we had designated 2019 as the “year of St. Francis” with a focus on his teachings of humility and simplicity. Inspired by a living Franciscan brother, Father Richard Rohr, whom we had read and met, and respected a lot, we embarked on a spiritual journey where we sought to focus on the natural environment around us, simplify our lives and focus on what’s important. Our visit to Assisi was like a pilgrimage and a highlight of that memorable and meaningful year.
In the following video slideshow, we hope to share with you a sense of the ambiance of this charming little 13th century town, that draws visitors from around the world, who want to experience its mystical enchantment.
Some memorable highlights of our stay in Assisi:
- Touring the Basilica di San Francesco.
- Sitting in Santo Stephano church and being awed by its simplicity.
- The Porziuncola Chapel within in Santa Maria degli Angeli Basilica.
- Walking the quiet lanes in the evening just before dusk.
- The walk from the old town to San Damiano church.
- The walk across the fields from San Damiano church to the railway station.
- The overwhelming joy of being in such a holy and peaceful place.
